When I saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked a little weak. I didn't have high hopes but was completely surprised. I can say that this is a solid movie. There really isn't anything horrible about it, nothing so bad that makes it unwatchable. If you want a semi-classic adventure movie, this is totally it.
The movie takes it's time building up the characters. It paints a vivid picture of where these characters are in life and their day to day. There isn't anything special about this part of the movie, some of it could come off as unnecessary, but it's not bad. Everything makes sense in the overall story and works. The movie makes it easy to understand what's going on, partly because nothing too crazy is happening.
So the setup for the movie is good, the characters are good, the plot is fine, the action is fine, what about the movie isn't solid? Some of the green screen and CGI work is not that great. In a lot of scenes throughout the movie, it is easy to tell when things are fake. It's not super distracting and probably not that noticeable if you don't watch it in a theater.
Tomb Raider is easy to watch with no real major story hangups. The inspiration from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was fun to see. I didn't have a problem with most of the movie not happening in a tomb, some other people did, but I appreciated the focus on character build up more. There is quite a bit of shaky camera work but isn't too distracting. The cinematography was boring but most people wouldn't notice that.
The stand out for me was Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. She did some really convincing acting during the second act of the movie when Lara gets injured. The audience I was with did a lot of audible groaning in a squeamish nature when watching the scene. I also liked Daniel Wu as Lu Ren playing the part of main side character. Just like everything else, the cast was very solid.
I liked watching Tomb Raider. It doesn't really do anything new, but it makes an effort to be fun. Going in with low expectations was a nice change of pace. Again, it's a solid movie but not the must-see action flick of the year. It's a good solid movie, nothing less and if they make a sequel, hopefully more.
7/10 People said Vikander wasn't pretty enough? That's dumb
