The Invisible Man - Review

Blumhouse movies usually run the gamut of guilty pleasures and straight trash, but every once in a while, they will help to create something that isn't an affront to your eyes; this has happened before with Whiplash and Get Out, films that have won Academy Awards. With the terrible trailers for The Invisible Man, people were wondering if the latest from Blumhouse would be another forgettable picture. With a Rotten Tomato score of 91, it seems that this is one of the anomalies. I had no intention of seeing this film in theaters, but after all of the commotion, I had to check it out

The Invisible Man is a far cry from the usual garbage Blumhouse puts out. The way it executes its ideas is pretty thought-out; some of the sequences towards the second half of the film are quite inventive and take full advantage of the premise. It doesn't feel like a movie made for under $10 million. The end product is a solid experience that worked for me and is worth seeing in theaters. Other than some over the top camera moves, the production values were good and culminated in an enjoyable experience.

While I did appreciate my experience, The Invisible Man is not devoid of criticism. Most of the problems I had with it come from its leaps in logic. There are basic situations where the explanation given by the film is not satisfactory in the moment. These were done to keep audiences on their toes and drive suspense, though all attempts at that fall flat if you don't buy it. What makes this problem notable is that its a recurring problem throughout the movie's runtime. So if it doesn't work the first time, then it probably will continue to fail until the end. 

As stated above, The Invisible Man is actually a good time at the theater. While it's not for the whole family, it is something a little more mature for audiences that are craving content in this weird time. The best part is probably Elizabeth Moss, who plays the main character; her performance and ability to sell the scenes is what makes it all come together. It won't be nominated for anything come awards season, but I wouldn't be surprised if some bring it up for their personal favorites at the end of the year.
