Other than these songs, there is nothing specifically negative about the movie. The whole idea is clever, and the messages about society to real life are nice, but the story element is a little lacking. The whole resolution and how the movie gets to its ending doesn't make sense. It feels lazy the way it wraps itself up. Not only do the events that lead to the end of the movie feel wrong, but the ending itself doesn't make sense.
I guess you can explain away the story faults by saying it's a children's movie but it's still annoying. I want to reiterate that the movie ends up being fine. Even though it definitely has its problems it's still the best thing you can take a child to see in theaters right now.
All the visual jokes were in the trailer
The first two-thirds of this movie is fine. Starts off strong, dips a little in the middle, but its the end that grounds the movie to a halt. The situation that the story comes up with to resolve the movie is straight up dumb. It even has the nerve to have white text over a black background like its some real story movie. It just felt silly and cheap the way it ended and doesn't end with the best last impression.
If you haven't been to the theater in months and depending on what your local theater is showing, this might be the best thing to watch. It works when it does and you cringe when it doesn't. If someone were to want to watch it after it comes to streaming, I wouldn't mind watching it again.
Snarky comment here
I know Black and Blanchett can deliver performances that are fun to watch, so when the movie had bad scenes with them I knew it wasn't their fault.
I also need to point out that the music choices constantly puzzled me. They always suffered from a multitude of problems. Whether it was too loud, not the right tone, or just the wrong song. I can't believe something was so noticeably wrong in the first 10 minutes.
If you have a child around 10 or younger, they might like the movie. Other than that, there is basically no reason to see this movie. One of the most egregious things about this movie is that it is boring. There were many moments where my mind started to wonder because the movie had lost my attention. It's not a super bad movie, but it is not good.
Tic toc, times running out to find something better to watch
The last scene in the movie is pretty good. It doesn't cut directly into another sequence with a different mood. It takes its time to let the feeling sink in. But its literally the last bit of film before the movie ends, so it's not like it saves the rest of the movie for being bad.
I would recommend to never see this movie. Not because it is super bad, but because you won't get anything from watching it. I feel like it the movie was to be edited differently, and maybe use some alternate takes, that it would be much better.
It could have easily been better
I think there were some really good ideas in this movie that weren't executed well. Like how there is an air gap between a ship and its cloaking shield and how a character can use that to their advantage. But all the little stuff that works conceptually doesn't make the movie better. It's a jumbled mess that doesn't take the time to set up the story points it wants to address.
Is there any scenario where you should see this movie? Maybe if you really don't have anything to do, but there are very few instances where you should. It comes down to this movie just not being very good for a multitude of reasons.
The ending is trying to set up a sequel, its real dumb
