So I have to put a disclaimer here in saying that I have never watched an Alien movie before. None of the Alien movies or Prometheus, I have only seen Alien Vs Predator. So I can only speak to this movie as a standalone with minimal ties to the other movies.
I think that the Alien lineage is an interesting path to follow. First it was truckers in space, then marines in space, to scientists, and with this instalment couples in space. Now from this description alone could muster make you worry, but don’t worry. The first act in the movie plays like a really bad setup to a horror movie, or similar to Prometheus. You have characters doing things against their personas and overlooking simple things. I feel like these people are probably qualified professionals who know the proper procedures when under stress. This does not show, making a mess of the believability of the story and veracity of their situation. There is only one character I can excuse for this kind of behaviour and they play a minimal part in the story anyways.
The rest of the movie is pretty fun to watch though. After you get the garbage out of the way, the movie turns into a fun action movie with a couple of tense moments. I don’t think it's possible to recapture Alien in today’s movie landscape, but this movie doesn’t even try. This is a good thing. The movie knows that it is more of an action movie with slight thinking moments. You’re never on the edge of your seat wonder what is going to happen next. The movie is very obvious once it sets itself up leaving no questions.
I enjoyed this movie like if it was the first Transformers movie. It wasn’t a deep thinker and didn’t try to be. The Alien franchise finally realised it’s role in movies, a action movie with some cool Xenomorph shots sprinkled in. All in all, even if you know very little about the Alien franchise you can sit and turn off your brain and have fun.
