Some people might think this is a horror movie based on the trailers that have come out but it's not. A Quiet Place is more of a thriller that has some baked in horror elements. That means, while it might seem like a horror movie, it honestly isn't. The movie is, however, fantastic.
From the set design to the acting, this movie keeps your attention. It quickly sets up the stakes and you feel the urgency in the characters. There is an ever present danger that makes good on the threat of death. The movie keeps you on your toes, only letting you breathe sighs of relief for seconds. It really feels like anything can happen, that no one is safe.
The movie does a great job keeping tensions high, but some of the dialogue is not great. The story has a fantastic premise and is told well. It is a very good thing that there is little dialogue. This movie has the problem of relying on child actors to deliver dialogue meant for an adult. When this happens, the scene is brief and passes quickly. I'm nitpicking here because I enjoyed the movie so much.
The world feels lived in. You buy the fact the world has had monsters in it for over a year. It is such a captivating movie to watch. I loved so much about it that I have to recommend you see it. It doesn't pull any punches and keeps you on your toes, but it does not have gore or sensationalized violence. This is a great choice because it adds to the danger instead of letting you get accustomed to it.
Definitely see it in a setting that allows you to experience it the way it is meant to. In my theater, it turned all loud people quiet. It feels like the audience itself couldn't make noise. It really is a great movie.
